Virtual Private Network
the connection of computers and networkable devices through a secure tunnel connection usually over the Internet
Synonyms, Abbreviations or Trade Names: VPN
Layman's Definition: Virtual private networks can be created using ether hardware appliances, software or both. Many companies use virtual private networks to connect their main office to satellite offices including home offices and doing so allows them to safely share files and any other network available resource such as printers. Using the restaurant analogy an example of a virtual private network could be a protected delivery system that a group of related restaurants use to ship food between them such ready to bake pies. In this scenario the food being moved by the delivery system is protected from being stolen or tampered with by an outside entity even though the delivery system shares resources with competitors and other individuals that might wish to do harm.
